World Health Organization research
The World Health Organization has released an 87 page report titled, Acupuncture: Review and Analysis of Reports on Controlled Clinical Trials.
The objective of this World Health Organization (WHO) publication is to provide a review and analysis of controlled clinical trials of acupuncture therapy, as reported in the current literature, with a view to strengthening and promoting the appropriate use of acupuncture in health care systems throughout the world. Information on the therapeutic mechanisms of acupuncture has also been incorporated.

According to a National Institutes of Health (NIH) panel, clinical studies have shown that acupuncture is helpful in treating:
- nausea caused by surgical anesthesia and cancer chemotherapy
- dental pain after surgery
- addiction
- headaches
- menstrual cramps
- tennis elbow
- fibromyalgia
- myofascial (connective tissue) pain
- osteoarthritis
- lower back pain
- carpal tunnel syndrome

- and to assist in stroke rehabilitation
